NEW: CDC changes for US Canine Imports

The required changes for importing dogs into the USA are as follows:

  1. Microchipping: All dogs, regardless of the country of origin, must be microchipped with an International Standards Organization (ISO)-compatible microchip. The microchip information must be included on importation documents to ensure proper identification of the dog.
  1. Age Requirement: All Dogs must be at least six months of age to be eligible for importation into the United States. This requirement helps ensure that dogs are old enough to receive proper rabies vaccination. This requirement is for all Dogs entering the US, whether or not they are born in the US.

  2. Rabies Vaccination: Dogs must be vaccinated against rabies. The specific vaccination requirements depend on the country of origin and the risk of dog-maintained rabies virus variant (DMRVV). Dogs from DMRVV-free and low-risk countries do not require additional proof of rabies vaccination. However, dogs from DMRVV high-risk countries must provide a standardized vaccination form verifying the rabies vaccination status of the dog. The vaccination form for foreign-vaccinated dogs must be endorsed by a government official in the exporting country.

  3. CDC Dog Import Form: All dog importers, regardless of the country of origin, must submit a CDC Dog Import Form prior to travel to the United States. This form includes the importer’s contact information and information related to each dog being imported. Importers must present a receipt confirming the submission of the CDC Dog Import Form upon arrival at a U.S. port.

  4. Documentation: Importers must provide appropriate documentation for the dog’s importation. The documentation must be endorsed by an official government veterinarian to be considered valid. (note: any documentation that is not from the United States must be completed in the country where the dog’s travel originates)

         a. Valid Airwaybill
         b. Health Certificate issued by a Certified Veterinary or Government Agency
         c. Pet Passport and/or Vaccination Record and BIO Information
         d. ONE of the Following Certifications:
              – Certification of Foreign Rabies Vaccination and Microchip CDC Form – must be endorsed by an official veterinarian of the dog rabies-                  free or low-risk country where the dog has been located. This must be completed within 30 days before arrival to the United States.
              – Certification of U.S.-issued Rabies Vaccination Form (for returning Dogs)
              – Valid USDA Export Certificate
              – Certification of Dog Arriving from DRMVV-free or Low-Risk Country Form

  5. Air Waybill (AWB): Dogs arriving by air must have an air waybill (AWB), which is a legally binding document issued by the carrier. The AWB serves as a tracking number and assists in monitoring the dog’s travel from the point of origin to the final destination.

Air carriers are now required to create an AWB for all dogs entering the United States via air, including dogs transported as hand-carried and checked baggage. Airlines must confirm the documentation and compliance of these dogs before allowing them to board the aircraft.

  6. Dog Imports from High-Risk countries for DMRVV: All requirements remain the same, including but not limited to: CDC Import Permit, Reservation with a CDC-registered Animal Care Facility, Certification of Foreign Rabies Vaccination and Microchip form, CDC Dog Import Form receipt, titer results from a CDC-approved laboratory (dogs without titer results will be required to quarantine).

  7. US-Vaccinated Dogs: Including dogs that have been in high-risk countries within the last 6 months can arrive at any U.S. port. Prior to traveling outside of the US, if the dog will be in high-risk country the dog owner must obtain a Certification of US-issued Rabies Vaccination Form signed by a USDA-Accredited Veterinarian.

Table of Requirements

It is important to note that these requirements may vary depending on the country of origin and the risk of DMRVV. Importers should consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the most up-to-date and specific importation requirements.
